조원강 작가의 작품에서는 사람이 아닌 ‘개’를 주인공으로 부각시키고 있다.
그의 작품은 대부분 주인과 함께 거리로 산책 나온 반려견들의 시각에서 바라보는 풍경들을 그리고 있다. 작가의 작품에서 사람의 눈빛은 볼 수 없고 신체의 일부분만 볼 수 있지만, 그와 반대로 개는 온전한 모습을 볼 수 있다.
이를 통해 ‘개’보다는 인간과 동등한 위치의 대상이라는 생각을 가질 수 있게 된다.
그의 많은 그림 속에서 개와 사람은 ‘리드 줄’로 연결되어 있는데, 이는 개와 사람이 서로의 책임을 함께 짊어지고 한 군데에 묶여 제한되는 것이 아니라 함께 자유를 누리자는 의미로 해석될 수 있다.

Cho Won Kang is known for his portrayal of fluid yet instant moments using paint and photorealism to document city life by utilizing the perspective from the camera lens or urban life in 21st century Manhattan. While his past work conveys the intimate relationship between dogs and their owners by capturing the low-angle cityscape from the dog’s perspective, his current work defies both time and space by showing a series of single images containing various overlapped snapshots of memories.
